Georgia Taxpayers to Receive Special Refund Checks Starting This Week

Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Revenue have officially begun issuing special tax refund checks for the 2023 tax year, starting the week of June 3, 2025. These one-time payments are part of a state income tax refund initiative passed by the Georgia General Assembly and signed into law earlier this year.

Who Is Eligible for the Special Tax Refund?

To qualify for the 2023 Georgia Special Tax Refund, you must:

  • Have filed a 2023 individual income tax return by the deadline (including extensions).

  • Have had a 2022 Georgia tax liability.

  • Be a Georgia resident or part-year resident.

How Much Will You Receive?

The maximum refund amounts are:

  • $250 for single filers.

  • $375 for head of household filers.

  • $500 for married couples filing jointly.

Actual amounts will vary based on your 2022 tax liability and filing status.

How Will You Receive Your Refund?

The Department of Revenue will automatically issue refunds to eligible taxpayers:

  • If you selected direct deposit for your 2023 return, the refund will be deposited into the same account.

  • If not, a paper check will be mailed to the address listed on your return.

No additional action is required by taxpayers.

When Will You Receive It?

Refunds began processing the week of June 3, 2025, and will continue throughout the summer. The Georgia DOR recommends allowing up to 8 weeks for delivery, depending on how you filed and whether your return required manual review.

Important Note

This refund is separate from your regular refund for 2023. If you’ve already received your normal refund, you may still receive this special payment if you meet the criteria.
